What a year.
2017 was filled with some of the best and most innovative AV we’ve ever seen, from the most creative LED to impactful retail installations.
It was undoubtedly the biggest and best year yet at Smart AV, made up of creative LED, retail LED integration, immersive LED, the construction of our brand-new 40,000sqft showroom and impressive outdoor LED at one of the world’s most greatest airshows, to name but a few highlights.
To celebrate the year, we’ve put together our top 10 AV highlights of 2017. Read on to get inspired for 2018.
1. Creativity at ICE Gaming
2017 saw ICE Gaming exhibitors take AV to the next level and become one of the most visually impressive shows in the world. Stand designers and exhibitors from around the world made a huge impact by using ingenious AV constructions, making ICE Gaming 2017 one of the most memorable shows of the year. We worked closely with stand designers from the initial phases of design for the first time at this year’s ICE Gaming and the impact was clear.
The IGT stand was a great example of AV pushing the boundaries of creativity, with its two chandeliers made up of 12 x 1.7m-high shards positioned in a circle and a large flown LED banner, that attracted attention from all corners of the show.

2. The Intel “Wonderwall” at MWC
A true highlight for 2017 has to be the magical Intel “Wonderwall” at Mobile World Congress 2017. The 18.5 million pixel, 2.5mm resolution, 6 tonne LED wall was motion-sensored and reacted to speakers when they took to the stage directly in front of it, creating an unprecedented effect that sparked the imagination of attendees and followers on social media.
This magnificent achievement in LED also coincided with our success in becoming a recommended AV supplier for Mobile World Congress 2018.
3. A Boost in Retail for Smart LED
Smart LED, a division of Smart AV, specialises in LED integration and saw a huge growth in permanent and fixed installs across a range of spaces in 2017, and particularly in the retail sector.
Smart LED transformed retail spaces using LED and AV for growing brands such as Missguided, Boden and TK Maxx. Missguided’s installation at their flagship store in Stratford, London, was a truly memorable moment for the team.
4. IBC Time-Tunnel
2017 was our 11th year as the verified official AV supplier at IBC, and arguably our best show ever. Alongside IBC and Google, we worked on creating the show-stopping IBC Time-Tunnel. The LED time-tunnel, located in the Future Zone, was made entirely of LED to provide an immersive experience for attendees and delegates.
Smart AV provided 72 7.8mm floor panels and 120 3.9mm panels to create the 6-m long by 3-m wide tunnel made entirely of LED, which was finalised after a number of tests and production meetings in-house. The effect was an impressive walk-through immersive experience revealing some of the show’s most innovative content in 360.
5. GQ Men of the Year Awards
For the third year running, we supplied the AV for the GQ 20th Anniversary of the Men of the Year Awards. The event is the biggest in the magazine’s calendar and features top clients and A-list celebrities taking to the stage, including guests such as Idris Elba and Courtney Love.
Working with event management company Time Based, we managed the production for the awards including recording, playback and the huge 3.9mm LED wall that took centre stage. . As a team, we transformed the iconic Tate Modern building in London with unique custom-made AV solutions.
6. Launch of our LED Showroom
To satisfy the need to give our customers a complete AV experience, we built a custom LED showroom in our 40,000sqft office. The space enables clients to visualise their content on every pixel pitch we offer, and in a space that features the best in AV technology.
We also opened up the space to our clients and ran a one-day forum Think Event Tech event called Smart Revealed. The forum enabled event planners, designers, production managers and stand builders to learn more about the latest in event technology and the future of AV for Smart AV.
7. Ciroc Advertising Video
During London Fashion Week, our client approached us with a concept design for Ciroc and asked us about the feasibility of having three rows of six LED panels displaying exactly the same content on each. We advised the client that we were able to advance on their content when we got to site and installed the LED rows, taking their content and measuring the physical space between each row of panels, to place the gap within their content to show an entire video over a set canvas, whilst taking the gaps between the LED into consideration.
The end product was absolutely fascinating immersive LED creation for the video production of Ciroc, with a whole room covered in mirrors and smoke machines, creating a brilliant atmosphere for the photoshoot. As you can see, the end result really showed off the LED and what it is capable of using, with what is in reality, a very simple design.
8. Dubai Airshow 2017
Dubai Airshow 2017 was one of Smart AV’s highest points of 2017. The runway saw not only impressive planes take flight but also majestic outdoor LED walls take centre stage. While the exterior of the show featured seamless videowalls that attracted attention from across the runway, the interior of the show also featured curved creative LED designs that were unforgettable.
Our team attended the event in full force, and as one of the show’s recommended AV suppliers, we had an onsite support team to ensure every product we supplied resulted in the best possible finish.
9. Evening with the Stars
AV took centre stage at one of the biggest and best star-studded evenings in the show calendar, Evening with the Stars. The Award event was hosted by Alesha Dixon and featured some of music and TV’s best-known faces, including Sophie Ellis-Bexter and guest duo from Strictly Come Dancing.
For 2017, the set was completely transformed from the usual projection set to an entirely digital set using LED. We supplied the full AV for the production, including the impressive 12m x 4m 3.9mm LED wall, lighting and sound. The impressive digital set resulted in one of the most spectacular evenings on the Awards calendar, with every detail catered for, including the recreation of star cloth using only LED.
10. Store window AV
2017 was a year of big stores and big names adopting AV and really running with it. We worked with a number of world-class brands to give them an immeasurable brand presence using their store window space and our LED. The end result was a series of displays that achieved great acclaim and impact.
We worked with well-known retail companies, such as Dior, Smythson and Harrods. The Smythson retail window was made up of a series of 2.8mm LED totems to create a slick, high-end and unique finish for their store window.
